Baby Teeth are important
for many reasons. Care for baby teeth is important to help
your child’s speech, bite and to form a proper path
in which the adult teeth can grow into. Many patients ask
me when they should take their child for their first visit
to the dentist. As a rule of thumb, they should visit the
dentist by their first birthday if not sooner. An early visit
to the dentist will provide years of healthy teeth and can
help prevent baby bottle tooth decay from occuring.
Cleaning your child’s
baby teeth is not much different than the cleaning of
adult teeth except that you should use a soft-bristled toothbrush
with a small head designed for infants. Brushing at least
once a day before bedtime will prevent plaque and bacteria
from building up and causing tooth decay.
Baby Teeth and Diet A balanced
diet for your child is extremely important to healthy teeth
and gums, your child’s diet should consist of: fruits
and vegetables, breads and cereals, milk and dairy products,
and meat fish and eggs. You should restrict the amount of
starches and sugars your child eats because they can increase
the chances of early tooth decay. We always consult with our
patients to determine a healthy diet for their children.
